Nottingham Nurses

July 22nd, 2010

So yesterday saw Crispin heading back to his spiritual home of Nottingham, where he spent 22 years of his life (including the balmy summer of 1976…during which he worked in a mortuary!). In tow were Pete and the two Kates (Byers & Coleman) which was lucky as the event was for 180 ward sisters from Nottingham University Hospitals… bijou it was not! If you’re ever lacking in energy I suggest you go and spend the day with a large group of Nottingham nurses – intelligent, sparky, good humoured and ready to embrace the new. And also very stylishly dressed!

The day was focused on Communicating as a Leader, particularly looking at how we perform under pressure and the effect our behaviour has on others. The new element of VOX’s voice work focusing on vocal tone was an exciting part of the day. Exploring our RELATIONAL, REFLECTIVE, ADMONISHING & ORATORIAL voices clearly struck a cord with everyone. FYI I’m typing this in RELATIONAL!

A great day was only enhanced by the serving of fruit sorbet at the 3.00 p.m. break. Whoever’s idea that was at the Crowne Plaza Hotel deserves a medal!

Media coaching with Dr Jean McEwan

July 21st, 2010

We’re very pleased to show you the brilliant results of some recent media coaching from VOX. Crispin ran two 1 to 1 sessions for Dr Jean McEwan from UCL Hospitals to improve her confidence in presenting to camera and using new media. And you can see the excellent results for yourself!

Top tip to help you face your working day…

July 21st, 2010

It only takes a moment to relax the body but feel strong too!

Sometimes we may not realise just how much tension we carry in our body. This can affect everything from our voice to our mental attitude and actually requires more energy. Simply saying to yourself “my shoulders are relaxed” can help, but if you have a moment to spare try this lovely relaxing position.

Find a hard back book and place it on the floor. Lie down and put the back of your head on the book. Bend you knees so that your feet are flat on the floor and the knees point up to the ceiling (or sky if you are in a sunny garden!) Place you arms by your sides, a small distance from your body with your palms facing up. Breathe out and each time you do so feel the body relaxing. Spend a lovely moment letting go, feeling the spine lengthen and the chest open out.

Before you are ready to stand up , say to yourself “my centre is strong” and it will be! Then slowly stand up and you are ready for the day!

Tip: Our muscles learn quicker than our brains, so the more you practice this, the easier having good posture will be!
